Use “Single Editor Tab Mode”, while you can choose “Normal” or “Vertical Tabs” as you prefer. Big arrow pointed to the \"Preferences\" icon other arrows explained in the text. In “preferences” you have to configure some of the panels: I suggest you to change just few things as I did. The very first thing you have to do once you opened the program (even before looking at the interface) is opening the preferences, this icon will be at the top right here or at the lower left here. Remember, for the future: there is no auto-update, you have to check the site every now and then (2-3 months usually for the big update, now 5.8) and manually download and install it. This seems a bit long but it is good because you get a clean installation every update instead of overwriting and overwriting again with risk of data corruption. Once you have installed the update you have to manually uninstall the previous version from your PC by using the classic Windows “App and Features” menu or from the “Start menu”: right-click on RawTherapee and “uninstall” it. Usually data folders have a path like this: “C:\Program Files\RawTherapee\ (version you installed)” (e.g. The official documentation of RawTherapee is “ ”, but it is sometimes confusing because it just describes every tool present in the software and sometimes it doesn’t give you examples.ĭownload RawTherapee for your system from “/downloads” and install it.įor Windows users, it must be noted that every update does not overwrite the previous one but creates a new folder. You could say then: “Is there any official manual?”. All of the tools are displayed the same time and, for the first time users, trying to understand and compare tools from other tutorials could be difficult and approaching the software could be overwhelming. Because the interface is different, there are different sliders or similar sliders working in a different way or other options with other names, and other functionalities which you don’t have to use. You could say: “Why don’t you just look at those Lightroom tutorials and apply what you learned to RawTherapee?”. So why this tutorial? Because on the internet there are a lot of tutorial about Lightroom and the others (including Darktable in the later years) but STILL just few about Rawtherapee. And the same for RawTherapee and Darktable which have also very advanced functionality you will never use). They are both valid solutions and also very powerful and, if you don’t care about making selective adjustments with brushes and levels (you could make them using other free softwares like GIMP), you will find that they are very close to the professional programs (assuming that you will not probably use all the functionality of those softwares. Here those free softwares come: RawTherapee and Darktable are two well known examples, available (now both of them) for Linux, MacOS and Windows. From 50$ to 300$ and more or with monthly payments they are not the first choice for new photographers who want to start editing RAW files. Also other softwares are offering solid solutions: DxO Photolab, Exposure X3, On1 Photo Raw, Luminar… Other programs moreover can offer something less (no layers or selective adjustments and brushes) but for free: Lightroom and the other software are certainly more powerful (in an absolute way) but are also expensive. Most of the photographers use Lightroom from Adobe to edit their own photos, which is indeed an incredibly powerful processing software. I hope this will make your first contact less shocking. Also the official Darktable forum is on, but it has an “unofficial” Reddit community with 2500 members and a lot of useful posts. Please note that the official Rawtherapee forum is on, as said in the description of the subreddit community and mine is an UNOFFICIAL guide to use Rawtherapee. Now that I have found the Rawtherapee community on Reddit and I know some new tricks I wanna try to update the content, correct the mistakes and post it again, and I hope it would help. Some time ago I posted a version of this guide series on Reddit but that time I didn’t know how to properly use Reddit so I didn’t post it in the right community making it easily forgettable lost in the thousand of posts of the site.
